Jackson police identified the motorist killed in the Friday night crash as Austen Hunter, 19, of Jackson.

A passenger, Hasson Renouf, 23, of Jackson, was listed in stable condition, police said.

The accident was reported at 10:30 p.m. when police officers from the Jackson and Manchester police departments responded to a 911 call about a crash on South Hope Chapel Road.

Upon arriving at the scene, police officers located a 1997 Chrysler Sebring which had gone off the roadway and into the woods.

Hunter was headed northbound when he failed to negotiate a curve. His car went off the road near a bridge and Pine Barrens Golf Club, police said.

The car struck several trees before coming to rest. The driver and passenger were both extricated from the car and transported to Jersey Shore Regional Trauma Center in Neptune, where Hunter was pronounced dead.

The crash is being investigated by Jackson Police Officer Kevin Chesney of the department’s Traffic Safety Unit and Officers Stephen Cilento, Joseph Pante and Sgt. Richard Bosley.

Speed and wet road conditions contributed to the crash, according to police.

Also responding to the scene to assist were Jackson First Aid, Berkeley First Aid, Whitesville Fire Department and the Ocean County Sheriff’s Department.

The investigation is ongoing and any witnesses to the incident are asked to contact Officer Chesney at 732-928-1111.
